Age Limit and Age Relaxation Rules for Government Jobs (SC/ST/OBC/EWS/PwD)
Confused about whether you can apply for a government job because of your age? You are not alone. Age limit is one of the most common reasons forms get rejected. This guide explains how age is calculated, how much relaxation you get, and how to check your eligibility before applying.

What is the age limit in a government job?
Every recruitment notification mentions a minimum age and a maximum age for the post. You must fall within this range on a particular date, called the cut-off date. Your age today does not matter. Your age on the cut-off date is what counts.
How is age calculated?
- The notification gives a specific date, for example “age as on 1 January 2026”.
- Your age is counted from your date of birth as written in your 10th marksheet, up to that date.
- Some exams count age on the last date of application, and some use a fixed date. Always read the notification.
- Even one day above the limit can make you ineligible, so check carefully.
What is age relaxation?
Age relaxation means extra years added to the upper age limit for certain categories. For example, if the maximum age is 30 and your category gets 5 years of relaxation, you can apply up to 35 years.
Common age relaxation categories
The numbers below are general examples used in many central government recruitments. Rules differ for each state and each recruitment, so always confirm from the notification.
- SC / ST candidates: usually 5 years
- OBC (non-creamy layer) candidates: usually 3 years in central jobs. Some states give more.
- PwD (persons with disability): usually 10 years, with extra years added for SC/ST/OBC PwD candidates
- Ex-servicemen: usually the years of service rendered plus a few extra years
- Women and widows (in some state jobs): extra relaxation in certain recruitments
- Government employees: relaxation in some departmental recruitments
- EWS candidates: usually no age relaxation in central jobs, but some states may offer it
Central jobs vs state jobs
Central government exams (such as Railway and SSC) follow central rules. State recruitments (such as UPESSC, UP Police, and BPSC) follow their own state rules. This is why the same candidate can get different relaxation in a UP exam and a Bihar exam. Never assume the rules of one exam apply to another.
Who can claim relaxation?
- You must belong to the category and hold a valid certificate issued by the right authority.
- OBC candidates need a valid non-creamy layer certificate in the correct format and date range.
- Domicile conditions may apply. Some states give relaxation only to their own residents.
- Keep your certificates ready before applying.
Example to understand it
Suppose a post has an upper age limit of 32 years as on 1 January 2026, and the OBC relaxation is 3 years. An OBC candidate can then apply up to 35 years as on that date. A General candidate must be 32 or below.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Checking age on today’s date instead of the cut-off date
- Using a date of birth that does not match the 10th marksheet
- Assuming the relaxation is the same in every exam
- Applying under a category without a valid certificate
- Not reading the notification fully
- Forgetting that the minimum age also applies
Quick checklist
- Cut-off date noted from the notification
- Age calculated using the 10th marksheet date of birth
- Category and relaxation confirmed
- Certificate valid and ready
- Both minimum and maximum age checked
