How to Spot Fake Government Job Websites and Scams
Last updated:
Fake job offers target people who badly want a government job. Learn the warning signs so you do not lose money or personal information.
Warning signs
- Anyone who asks for money to "guarantee" selection, a transfer or a better posting.
- A request to pay the application fee to a personal bank account, wallet or UPI ID.
- A website that looks official but has no notification, no vacancy details and no contact information.
- Offers or links forwarded on WhatsApp, Telegram or SMS with a short deadline.
- Spelling mistakes, an unusual web address or a logo copied from a real department.
How to verify a recruitment notice
- Find the notification on the official website of the department or board. Type the address yourself.
- Check that the vacancy, dates and fee match the official notice.
- Many official government sites end in .gov.in or .nic.in, but not all do. Confirm the address from a ministry or department page or a printed notice.
- Pay the fee only through the payment gateway on the official application portal.
- If you are unsure, contact the helpline given on the official website.
Protect your information
- Never share an OTP, password, card details or UPI PIN with anyone claiming to be a recruiter.
- Do not send scans of your documents to unknown email addresses or chat accounts.
- Use a separate email address for job applications.
If you have been cheated
Contact your bank immediately and ask them to block the transaction or account. Report the fraud on the national cyber crime reporting portal at cybercrime.gov.in or call the helpline 1930. Keep screenshots, chats, receipts and the website address as evidence.
